General information

Potato Zhukovsky Early: main characteristics

Gardeners who grow vegetables throughout the country, both for themselves and for sale, are mainly interested in early-ripening, unpretentious and disease-resistant varieties. One of these varieties is considered to be the result of domestic breeding - “Zhukovsky Early” (potato). Reviews about it are more often positive, it is quite resistant to diseases, besides it has a good yield.

The main characteristics of the variety

This potato was specially bred by domestic breeders for growing in temperate climates and relatively short summers. The potato variety "Zhukovsky" is distinguished not only by its high yield, but also by its large size of tubers. On average, they reach a mass of 130-150 grams, but they are also found larger. Their surface is almost smooth, light pink in color, with brighter eyes. On the cut, the tuber is white, has excellent taste.

Seed potatoes "Zhukovsky" are planted when the threat of night frost has passed. As a rule, this is the end of April - the beginning of May. Tubers germinate pretty quickly, and after just a couple of weeks they turn into formed bushes of bright green color. Since this variety belongs to the early early ripening, the crop is usually harvested 2 months after planting. Potatoes have a high level of drought resistance and cold resistance.

Shrubs do not grow very high, they turn out to have little branches. But the blooms "Zhukovsky" quite abundantly. Its corollas are pink-violet, the berries of this variety are absent.

Diseases and parasites

Growing their own vegetables at a country site, gardeners often choose to plant potatoes "early Zhukovsky". The description of its properties suggests that in this case, you can get a high yield, even under unfavorable circumstances. Variety bred resistant to most of the solanaceous diseases. Therefore, the focus of gardeners should be given to the destruction of weeds and insects that feed on both the leaves of the plant and the tubers themselves.

The first category that can affect the yield of potatoes is the Colorado potato beetle. It is possible to fight with adult insects and larvae both chemically and mechanically. In the first case, shrubs are periodically treated with special solutions. In the second, the bugs are simply collected and destroyed.

Another enemy of most tuberous vegetables is the Medvedka. This exceptionally intelligent and hardy insect sometimes has a huge appetite. It is not easy to fight it, since mechanical destruction is unlikely, and the Medvedka is resistant to many chemicals.

Tuber Consumer Quality

Those who want to get a good harvest of the “second bread” without any special efforts should definitely pay attention to the “Zhukovsky early” potatoes. Reviews of gardeners confirm the ability to grow 150-200 kg on each weave even not very fertile land with moderate watering and minimal maintenance.

Large smooth tubers with few eyes are very convenient to clean. Cooked potatoes of this variety quickly enough. At the same time it has excellent taste. Suitable for frying, does not fall apart during processing.

When properly stored in conditions of moderate humidity and temperature, it is able to remain healthy and tasty throughout the winter, until the middle of spring.

Those who seek to grow a good harvest of excellent early potatoes on their own plot, we can recommend to pay attention to the variety "Zhukovsky". Its large smooth tubers can be dug already on the 60th day after planting. It is unpretentious and resistant to disease, while it has excellent taste.

Variety description

The potato variety “Zhukovsky Early” is bred by breeders as the most unpretentious species for areas with risky agriculture and short summer. It is successfully cultivated from the western borders to the Far East.

He calmly tolerates drought, and cooling does not affect the consistently high yields. From one hectare is removed to 400 centners.

Up to 10 large tubers, 170 g each, are dug under one bush. Their full maturation occurs after 60 days from the moment of landing in the ground.

The soil has no claims to the variety. A naturally healthy potato adapts to weather conditions; it has high immunity for most diseases.

Under the pink thin and smooth skinned flesh is white. "Zhukovsky Early" is economical, with the use of waste is obtained at least. Non-digestible oval tubers are suitable for cooking first dishes, stewing, frying. A great feature of the variety is that the sliced fresh potatoes do not darken while waiting for their turn in cooking. Zhukovsky Early has great value in low starch content, up to 10%.

Bushes of medium size, slightly sprawling, consist of several branched stems. The leaves are green large. Blooms profusely, but not for long. Flowers collected in inflorescences, red-purple with white tips.

Having planted potato seeds of this variety in the ground in April, it will be possible to harvest in July. Potatoes are beautifully stored and maintain their marketability for a long time.

Applying preventive spraying in May, you save the bushes from the invasion of pests.

We describe the variety "Zhukovsky Early" on the main characteristics:

As mentioned earlier, the early potato variety “Zhukovsky Early” is completely unpretentious, therefore it is found everywhere in the whole of Eurasia: from the North-West to the Far Eastern regions and even in the hot climate of the North Caucasus.

That is why he adapted well to cultivation on different types of soil. If you follow the simplest rules of care you can get sufficiently large crop, at least 40 tons per hectare, already in July.

This is extremely attractive for amateur gardeners who grow all the vegetables and fruits in the garden to their table. After all, there is nothing tastier than boiled in a uniform or fried with onions, mushrooms and fresh greens of young potatoes of an early grade.

And it is worth noting that “Zhukovsky Early” is very well kept, so you can enjoy your favorite dishes all year round. The main thing to remember about the basic rules of winter storage, to observe the terms and choose the right place.

In the table below, we have collected several important characteristics of different varieties of potatoes, so that you can compare them with Zhukovsky early:

Diseases and pests

It is also very important that this potato variety is sufficiently resistant to such frequent diseases as:

  • cancer, accompanied by the formation of dark growths, resembling a cauliflower,
  • potato nematode, which is a parasite worm that breeds on the roots of plants of the Solanaceae family and as a result of its vital activity it forms a bald spot,
  • Alternaria, which can be recognized by the presence of brown and dark brown spots on the leaves,
  • rhizoctoniosis, better known as black scab.

However, Zhukovsky Early is subject to such insidious and dangerous fungal disease as late blight. Otherwise, this disease is called potato rot.

Before planting, select healthy roots from infected. This will significantly reduce the risk of late blight. Or this problem can be avoided by early ripening of the crop, if seven to ten days before harvesting, remove the tops.

On our site you will find all the necessary information about how to deal with it.

A huge advantage of the "Zhukovsky Early" is its drought resistance. It is worth noting that any variety of potatoes from becoming wetted begins to weaken and become ill. But the super early and early species, planted in spring in the soil well-moistened by nature after winter, do not need additional watering.

We are well aware of the heat of the second half of June, and in such hot weather it is still necessary to produce the morning watering of potatoes in order to preserve the plants and the harvest, respectively.

Thus, the early variety of potatoes "Zhukovsky Early" is ideal for growing in any Russian vegetable garden. Not susceptible to the soil, it will delight you with an extremely tasty, nutritious and rich harvest, without requiring constant care or special fertilizers. Use fertilizing when planting, and when and how to make it, we will tell you.

In addition, for the cultivation of this potato you absolutely will not need to study and apply complex agrotechnical methods, such as Dutch technology, cultivation in bags or barrels. It is enough to respect the time of planting and harvesting, and not to neglect mulching. And, of course, do not forget that the most important thing in any business is love. May your garden be always healthy and healthy!

We also suggest that you familiarize yourself with other varieties of potatoes with different ripening terms:

Characteristic variety

The originator of the potato Zhukovsky Early is the State Scientific-Research Institute of the Potato Farm named after A.G. Lorch. Thanks to the efforts of local breeders managed to get a plant that is much faster than the rest brings the crop.

Fruits of table purpose are successfully processed into crisp and have a great taste in any form. Moreover, their formation is stretched in time, so you can gradually dig up potatoes during the entire period of its ripening.

During the growing season, the lateral shoots of plants spread apart in different directions, so that with a certain planting method (for example, using straw), several potatoes can be obtained without even digging up the whole shrub. Usually from one seed fruit from the first reproduction is obtained about 4-5 kg of a new crop.

The Zhukovsky Early variety can boast of good resistance to the effects of many typical pests and diseases: it is much less likely to be affected by scab, potato nematode and not so often suffer from rhizoctonia.

Botva and tubers of a plant are often affected by late blight, and in some cases bacterioses, to which they are moderately resistant.

Advantages and disadvantages

Each variety has its advantages and disadvantages; however, when choosing the Zhukovsky Early for planting potatoes, you will see that it has comparatively more advantages. The valuable qualities of the plant include:

  • abundant yield with high quality of fruits with different cultivation methods,
  • good level, frost, drought and shade resistance,
  • the possibility of early collection of tubers, due to their rapid maturation,
  • good taste characteristics, especially when preparing young fruits.
Among the drawbacks of Zhukovsky Early especially are low resistance to late blight and the possibility of rotting of tubers with a long stay in overly moist soil.

Features of growing

A good end result of growing potatoes of this variety depends on the correct preparation of the tubers for planting. They are placed in boxes in several rows, placed in bags or simply left in a greenhouse, poured in a heap and covered with foil.

When germinating in the room, planting material is regularly moistened and turned over, and diffused lighting is achieved by covering the tubers with a white cloth or paper.

In addition, when moistening fruits, they must be disinfected using for this purpose a solution of potassium permanganate (such treatments are carried out every 6 days). A sign of readiness for landing on the soil will be centimeter sprouts on the tubers, but if the weather outside does not allow them to be planted in open soil yet, they can safely spend a few more weeks in shelter.

If the tubers are planted in the first half of May, then the result can be expected approximately in the middle of July, but in this case the fruits still continue to form, and when excavated, they will not be large. If you are not in a hurry, then wait another month and then the harvest will be pleased with really impressive size. On average, from the moment of planting to the collection of the first fruits, about 60-65 days pass.

In short, despite the fact that the potato variety Zhukovsky Early is early ripe, in order to get a good harvest, proper preparation of planting material, regular watering of plantings (in the hot period every evening) and timely removal of all pests are necessary.

In order to accelerate the development of planted tubers, especially during early planting, the area with plantings can be covered with agrofibre, which will protect young seedlings from unexpected frosts, and will contribute to an increase in the temperature of the soil. With increasing temperature indicators shelter removed.

Growing Zhukovsky potato varieties on your plot will not take more time than caring for any other variety, but the end result is usually much higher.

Potato Description Zhukovsky Early

Seed potatoes obtained by crossing domestic varieties of Hydra and Berry. The people became famous for their unpretentiousness to the growing conditions, since they equally successfully endure drought and frost. Authorship belongs to the team of agronomists who selected culture at the All-Russian Research Institute of Potato Farming named after A.G. Lorch. Having successfully passed all examinations, the variety was entered in the state register in 1993.

Potatoes belong to the "pink" varieties of very early ripening. If it is planted at the end of April, then in early July it is already possible to feast on the first, albeit small, crop. At this time, the roots are at the stage of formation and will not be able to surprise with size, but by the middle of August they will become leveled and rather weighty. The term of maturation of Zhukovsky is not more than 60–65 days.

Important! Tuberization in a variety of stretched, which allows the collection of tubers during the entire period of the formation of the crop.

Initially, a variety of early potatoes was intended for planting in a temperate climate zone with short summer conditions. Thus, the cultivation regions for Zhukovsky are defined as follows: Ural, Volgo-Vyatka, Central, Middle Volga and Lower Volga regions, North-West and Far Eastern. Poor germination rates were recorded in the Northern and East Siberian territories.

According to agronomists, potato yield in the Central region is about 145–324 kg per 100 m 2. At the same time, the maximum indicators were recorded in the Lipetsk region - 380 kg per 100 m 2. But according to breeders, the potential yield of a variety reaches 600 kg per 100 m 2 (subject to all agricultural practices).

The number of commercial quality tubers in a nest can be medium or high (up to 10-15 pieces). When planting potatoes in early May, the first crop is usually harvested in July, and the main crop is dug no later than mid-August. Keeping the tubers in the ground is not recommended, as this leads to a deterioration in taste and rotting at high soil moisture.

Indicators of marketable yield are quite high: about 400-450 centners per hectare, and under favorable conditions and compliance with agrotechnical requirements up to 550-600 centners per hectare.

When describing potato varieties "Zhukovsky Early", it is necessary to note its precocity and long-term tuber formation on long stolons, actively expanding to the sides. Thanks to this feature, you can always get a crop throughout the entire growing season of the plant, not digging up the bushes completely, but collecting several tubers from them, which is especially convenient when planting on light soils or in straw.

Stolons are underground plant stems at the ends of which tubers develop.

This variety is considered to be quite durable in conditions of cool temperatures and low light, heat and drought. Its yield depends little on the type of soil and common diseases:

The disadvantages of the variety "Zhukovsky Early" include its susceptibility to late blight of tops and tubers. To protect the tubers from phytophthora, experienced growers advise cutting all the tops at the end of July, that is, 10-14 days before digging out the main crop. Also, if the variety has been cultivated continuously for many years, it is necessary to update the planting material from time to time, acquiring decontaminated seed potatoes from bona fide producers.

“Zhukovsky Early”, according to the majority of vegetable growers, is unpretentious in its care and responds well to conventional farming practices: weeding and loosening the soil between the rows, hilling the bushes, moderate watering, complex feeding, preventive treatments from pests.

Tamara, 44, Vyazemsky

We all love the early young potatoes, tender and sweet. For food every year we plant the Zhukovsky variety. It gives a good harvest and the tubers are very beautiful - pink outside, white inside. When cooking do not fall apart and do not darken. We do not leave this potato for storage, it lays a maximum until the New Year.

The roots are spreading to the sides, and the tubers have to look for when digging over a large area. Bushes strongly affected by blight and Colorado potato beetle. Need to constantly handle. There are much more productive and resistant varieties.

Rodion, 50 years old, Kaluga

Variety Zhukovsky is really one of the earliest. In the summer, we are starting to break in the first potato at the end of June. Pleasant to taste - not sticky, starchy, quickly cooked, not turning into porridge. Excellent baked right in the skin. The skin is thin, not coarse, easily peeled off. Potatoes, though early, but quite suitable for storage. In our basement at +4 degrees, it normally withstands the entire winter. Special difficulties in the care does not require. Water it whenever possible, weed and roll it up. With the Colorado beetles, of course, we constantly fight. The harvest is stable, tubers of 8-10 from a bush.

Lydia, 54 years old, Perm region

Our favorite potato variety Zhukovsky needs to be updated every 3-4 years, otherwise it starts to hurt more often, the size of the tubers and the yield decrease. Last season we bought only 10 meristim (grown in a test tube) tubers, planted them to a depth of 6-8 cm at a distance of 15-20 cm from each other. In early August, they dug 1.5 buckets of excellent potatoes from one row.

An experienced gardener shares his opinion on the peculiarities of the variety “Zhukovsky Early” and its productivity in the following video:

For several years she worked as a television program editor with leading producers of ornamental plants in Ukraine. At the dacha, of all types of agrarian works, prefers harvesting, but for the sake of it she is ready to regularly weed, pick, pinch, water, tie up, thin out, etc. I am convinced that the most delicious vegetables and fruits are home grown!

Compost - rotted organic residues of the most diverse origin. How to do? In a heap, pit or large box they put everything in a row: kitchen remains, tops of garden crops, weeds cut before flowering, thin twigs. All this is mated with phosphate flour, sometimes straw, ground or peat. (Some summer residents add special accelerators of composting.) Cover with foil. In the process of overheating, the heap is periodically agitated or pierced for fresh air. Usually compost “ripens” for 2 years, but with modern additives it can be ready even in one summer season.

One of the most convenient methods for harvesting a grown crop of vegetables, fruits and berries is freezing. Some believe that freezing leads to the loss of the nutritional and beneficial properties of herbal products. As a result of the research, scientists found that the reduction in nutritional value during freezing is practically absent.

From varietal tomatoes, you can get "your" seeds for sowing the next year (if you really liked the variety). And with hybrid it is useless to do it: the seeds will be obtained, but they will carry the hereditary material of the wrong plant from which it was taken, but of its many “ancestors”.

In Australia, scientists have begun experiments on cloning several varieties of grapes grown in cold regions. Climate warming, which is predicted for the next 50 years, will lead to their extinction. Australian varieties have excellent characteristics for winemaking and are not susceptible to diseases common in Europe and America.

Oklahoma farmer Karl Burns developed an unusual variety of multi-colored corn called Rainbow Corn. The grains on each cob are of different colors and shades: brown, pink, purple, blue, green, etc. This result was achieved by the long-term selection of the most colored ordinary varieties and their crossing.

Natural toxins are found in many plants, not an exception and those that are grown in gardens and vegetable gardens. So, in the pits of apples, apricots, and peaches there is prussic acid (hydrocyanic acid), and in the tops and skin of immature solanaceous (potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes) - solanine. But do not be afraid: their number is too small.

It is believed that some vegetables and fruits (cucumbers, celery, all types of cabbage, peppers, apples) have a "negative caloric content", that is, more calories are consumed during digestion than they are contained. In fact, the digestive process consumes only 10-20% of the calories obtained with food.

The homeland of pepper is America, but the main breeding work on the cultivation of sweet varieties was carried out, in particular, by Ferenc Croat (Hungary) in the 20s. XX century in Europe, mainly in the Balkans. Pepper has already come to Russia from Bulgaria, that's why it got its usual name - “Bulgarian”.

In small Denmark, any piece of land is very expensive. Therefore, local gardeners have adapted to grow fresh vegetables in buckets, large packages, foam boxes filled with a special earth mixture. Such agrotechnical methods allow you to get a crop, even at home.
