Features goji and main varieties

Goji - deciduous shrub with small leaves and hanging shoots. Some varieties of this plant reach a height of three meters. Krona goji is quite thick, expands in width, and the root system is powerful, having a large number of offspring.

Also, this shrub attracts the fact that it blooms almost the entire warm season - from the end of May to mid-October. Goji flowers are small, purple, have a pleasant aroma.

Fruits will begin to appear in the third year of bush life, and the entire warm season will also appear, which will allow you to collect about 10 harvests per year. The amount of the crop depends on the age of the plant and varies from a kilogram to ten from one bush. The berries are either red. Or orange color up to 2 cm.

There is a huge variety of varieties of this shrub, but only the fruit of wolfberry and Chinese have useful properties.

Proper preparation for planting shrubs

There are the following options for the cultivation of shrubs on your site:

  • With the help of seeds.
  • Tops of shoots.
  • Cuttings.
  • Root scions.

It is best to use the option with goji kernels or cuttings. Let's look at them in more detail.

Goji seeds

Due to the thin seed coat, they do not need to be subjected to pre-sowing treatment, scarification, and goji grains are distinguished by good germination.

To obtain seeds, remove them from the ripe fruit and soak for a couple of hours in the epine. It is better to germinate material in loose and well-drained soil, for example, a soil mix from loam and crushed peat in a ratio of 1: 2 is perfect.

To germinate seeds is simple: they are “superficially” sown in slightly moistened soil, be sure to keep the soil moist at all stages of germination. At the same time, the air temperature in the room where you grow goji berries should not fluctuate much.

The container with the future shrub needs to be put in a warm place, be sure to cover the landing with glass or film. At the same time try to protect the grains from severe overheating or hypothermia.

Seeds germinate on average in two weeks, and after the first sprouts appear, tara with seedlings should be transferred to partial shade. As soon as 4-6 true leaves appear on each seedling, the seedlings are transplanted into separate containers with a depth of about 7-8 cm. Do not forget to pinch the top of the seedlings at the stage of active growth, which will ensure the density of bushes in the future.

And just before planting goji in the ground, the bushes should be helped to better adapt to the new place, dropping the roots of the plant into the nutrient solution for almost half an hour.

Planting cuttings

You can get new shrubs by dropping the lower branches or tops of the shoots. The main thing is to cut off the rooted part of the bush from the mother plant before the onset of frost.

Best of all, if the length of the cutting is about 10 cm. To speed up rooting, be sure to place the cutting for a couple of minutes in the root or any other growth stimulator. Around July, you need to plant cuttings in the greenhouse, but many gardeners are advised for rooting to plant bushes in open ground, but under the film.

There is another option - to grow goji bushes using semi-lumbering cuttings, although this method is ideal only for hybrid varieties. In the wild, goji breeds are self-sown.

Pests and diseases

For this culture, pests such as: Colorado beetles, aphids and caterpillars of the winter moth are dangerous. To destroy them, the plant must be sprayed with wormwood extract.

Dereza vulgaris can be ill with late blight and powdery mildew. Most often this occurs when the plant is not fed with wood ash. It must be introduced into the soil during the planting of the seedling, and if the first symptoms of any of the diseases are noticed, the bush will need to be powdered on the foliage with tree ash. If this procedure does not give the desired effect, then the plant will need treatment with a fungicide.

Such a culture is characterized by moderate winter hardiness, it can withstand a decrease in air temperature to minus 15-25 degrees. But if the winter has little snow, the bush may freeze. In this regard, in the deep autumn it should be carefully covered, for this they use lapnik.

When cultivating varieties with low frost resistance, it is recommended to dig up a bush along with a large earthy clod and plant it in a container. The plant will winter in a non-freezing basement at low positive temperatures.
